“ We are torn between nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known” (Carson Mc Cullers)
Dear Ears around the universe!
We are so happy that you embark with us on this wild journey during the coming days, weeks - who knows even months and years!
Today is the very first day….
A blank page…
Our very first letter to you is in your inbox! And also our first podcast is ready for you!
This week, we will do quite some travelling together.
First stop is Mount Lykaion, in Greece. And as the week goes on, we will continue our trip to Reggio Emilia in Italy…
Well the reason for meeting at Mount Lykaion today is that we want to meet our first companion for our journey: The Greek God Pan! Pan is the God of the wild, the natural… Sometimes, he is a bit nasty, chaotic and well - quite often love-sick. And we admit - he smells a bit strong… Pan is a very dear - however stinky - friend of us and we are super happy to have him here!
Some say that nowadays, our dear Pan fights quite much for his survival. You know, modern people, as you and me - we don’t really believe in Gods of that kind isn’t it? Half man, half goat? So survival is quite a struggle for our dear Pan - you can read all about it in Tom Robbins fantastic book Jitterbug Perfume …
Well, the mythology says that Pan fell in love with the lovely wood-nymph Syrinx and followed her down to the river where her sisters transformed her into a hollow reed. As Pan embraced the reed, a beautiful sound emerged - the flute of Pan was born…
But, as we said before - Pan is having a hard time these days (as it is true for many natural beings). His flute is almost not audible anymore…
So, let’s start our journey by helping out Pan! This week, we go and find sounds in the hollow reeds...
Of course, we are well aware that in the place you live, there might be no reeds … maybe you are even locked down in your apartment somewhere.
But since this journey is as much about phantasies and dreams as it is about the real world - quite anything goes.
Your hollow reed is any kind of natural thing you find in your world. A piece of wood. A straw. A feather. An apple …
Today's task is to record a loud sound of something natural around you.
Please share your sound and an image (it can be a picture /drawing / film of the natural thing that produces todays sound) with us:
Post a film / recording (around 1 minute in length) with an image on Instagram using the #panshollowreed #ambientradio (like this, we find your work!)
Also please upload your sounds on Google drive right here. Please give your track the following title: panshollowreed_yourname_yourplace (example: panshollowreed_delia_mountlykaion). Like this we find your work for the weekly remix! >> Here you find some more instructions)
One more thing to say before we leave you:
We are all new to what we are doing here. It is an experiment! So, in case you have ideas, thoughts and skills and want to participate in our project - please please do and write to us! Also, forgive us our imperfect English… We try our best!
For today, we leave you - leaving behind only a faible scent of goat and swamps and love….
Stay tuned for the next few days - more and more interesting people will join us!
kiss kiss love love!
Pan and all the crew.
