Season 3 Week 3 Day 13: The crowd and the lonely hearts … and Greetings from Tolyatti, Russia!

Dear friends with big ears!

So happy that you are with us - also on day 13 of our adventure!

Today, we send our greetings from Tolyatti in Russia! Lyudmila Zilberstheyn sends us an audio postcard to enjoy! She writes: "I live in Russia in 2 places and very often move between Moscow and my home not far from Tolyatti. In this two places I recorded my audio sounds - in our own house at the New Year's Party, in the aero express, in a concert Hall, and in nature outside.

Today will be a very special day … Today, we want to become curious voyeurs …

Did you ever overhear a bit of conversation and imagine a story around it?

Just like Sophie Calle did: In the early 1980s, she found an address book on the street in Paris. She started to call different people and asked them to meet and to tell her about the stranger “Pierre”, whom she never met … Is it art? Or simply stalking? Sometimes, the borders are quite fluid, isn’t it?

And there is another wonderful reference - “the Man of the Crowd” by Edgar Allan Poe, who makes us understand that through observing others, we might actually learn about ourselves. There is a stranger within all of us, isn’t it? The Man in the Crowd brings us directly to the work of Carina Pesch. She is our dear guest today and our great inspiration! Her wonderful radio play “Follow Me” will be part of the Sonohr festival - and we are superhappy to have her here with us today! Follow Me is a “composition for voice and truth”: Carina “randomly follows people in public space, describes their path, their behavior, what she perceives and spins stories about the people she follows. In the process, the question always arises: about whom does this say something?” Listen to our podcast and to our conversation with Carina!

Carina uses a very special method to create a “sonic pattern” in her work. She is doing a voice improvisation - called automated speaking - that consists of continuously speaking and describing what you see without much reflection. This method was developed by Antje Vonwinckel. Here are the instructions for automated speaking -translated and adapted by Carina Pesch and in both German and in English! One of the nicest points in her instructions are:

Use your tongue as a camera. Taste the environment.
Zoom into the landscape and zoom out again.

Do you feel like giving this method a try?

Today we want to invite you to observe the people who are populating your square. Tell us what you see, tell us what you hear! Create a pattern, follow someone for a few steps and try to imagine what brings this person here, what errand, what destiny …

Speak in your own language - no matter whether it is a curious language like Swiss German or a specific dialect … We are curious to hear all kinds of pronunciations - and in the end, all our speech will create an interesting sonic pattern …

Today’s task is to record pieces of conversations you overhear and to narrate your observations of the people crossing the square

Get inspired by Carina Pesch and her wonderful work!

Once you're done please share your work with us!

Please share your sound and an image / video with us:

And let’s remember - maybe all we hear is telling a story about ourselves? Who knows?

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to be part of our sonic experiments - we are so happy that you joined us!

Today, we leave you to the chatting of strangers … and hear you tomorrow!
