Season 3 Week 1 Day 5: Your Park Orchestra - and Greetings from Hannover!

Good morning dear Ears!

Greetings from Hannover!

We will spend our last day of the first week in Kurt Schwitters’ hometown - and the home of Jürgen Morgenstern! Jürgen is a dear and very talented community member from day one on … Today, he lends us his ears and takes us for a walk through Hannover: He created a wonderful piece for our ears only! Listen to it in our podcast! Yes… you are right, there is Kurt Schwitters poem “What a beauty” …. :-) What a great inspiration for how to remix and combine sounds! And this is precisely what we will do today: This week's last task will be to compose and re-compose with the sounds we collected so far. Did you know that Max Richter created a wondrous re-composition of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons? He took the iconic composition apart and re-created his very own version - a tribute to the master, yet something of his very own … And this is how the circle closes - Schwitters made cut-ups and collages - just as Jürgen did in his work!

There is a whole orchestra hidden in your park! The last task of this week is to make this orchestra play at its best: Create a collage of the sounds of your park!

You might think that this is a difficult task to do - and that is why we want to include some technical tips and tricks at this point.

Here are some ways of how to do a composition in an easy way with cheap and quick tools:

How to use Instagram Reels to create a sound composition:

  1. Open Instagram Reels

  2. Record the first sound, release the button, then record the second sound and add as many recordings as you wish. The Reel can have a maximum of 30 seconds though. But for our purposes, that is enough!

  3. If you want to work with the videos you made previously, you can select a video from your gallery. Then you can add other videos using “add” on the upper right of your screen. You can always adjust the length of the clip or add filters or sounds from other sources.

  4. Download the finished Reel and share it with us! (you can download the reel also if it’s not published - it will create a new video in your folder.)

If you want to work a bit more sophisticated - you can also use the free-of-charge programme Audacity on your computer.

You can download the software here. And this one is a great Tutorial on how to get into Audacity! Here is another interesting tutorial about how to edit sounds on your mobile phone.

These are only some initial hints on how to do it - the best way to learn is to try it out and play around!

Also, please share your ideas and experiences with the community - via our Telegram chat for example! This is also the place to ask questions, as well as via direct messages on our social media channels. Feel free to ask anything!

By now, we are more than ready to go to work!

We are at the end of our first week together - you managed to record something really impossible to record - a whole park! Now, it is time to impress …

Today's task is to combine and create a collage with the sounds you collected! Let the park orchestra play!

Please share your sound and an image / video with us:

Here we go - the first week is done! We are so happy and grateful for all those walks in the park we shared this week!

THANK YOU to all of you so much!

We are very much looking forward to seeing you again next week!

Love and Kisses, the Ambient Radio Crew
