Season 2 / Week 3 / Day 15 Friday: All over the rainbow, all around the world

Hello hello!

That was a weird day yesterday, right?

We came to the end of Season 2 … A lot of work lies behind us - some of you still need to finish their collections and then, we are almost ready for a long summer break…

But - not yet there - a last push, a last effort - and we are ready for a special exercise today!

Today we are up to something really special. We are still in Delhi with Suvani Suri! She invites us to meet other fascinating artists around the globe… We would like to share a very special work by Halim El-Dabh called ‘Wire Recorder Piece’, 1944.

In the vanguard of electronic composition and musique concrete is the Egyptian composer, and ethnomusicologist Halim El-Dabh, who pioneered and shaped the movement of electronic sound to reveal its many possibilities.

Working in Cairo, as early as 1944, Halim was experimenting with field recording and sound manipulation using a wire recorder. For him, recorded sound opened up the possibility of going “inside the recording to find the hidden meaning” and investigate the “inner sound”. This resulted in his breakthrough electroacoustic work ‘The Expression of Zaar’ or ‘Wire Recorder Piece’.

For the piece, he processed the recordings of women chanting at a Zaar or an Egyptian healing ceremony to yield a lush sonic field, richly layered with complex textures and resonances.

“I was carving a sound. I used noise like I would a piece of stone.”
(Halim El-Dabh)

By now, it is time for you to carve a rainbow… How should that even be possible? To be really honest, we have no idea :-) But imagine how Halim El-Dabh went out to explore and tried to make the impossible become possible…

And we think that for the grande finale of Season No.2 of Ambient Radio, we should reach out for a last fantastic moodscape. We ask you to put in all what you like, to mix and overlap all the different moods we collected so far… The interesting part happens when we mix the colors, when moods overlap and when we get lost within the “in-between” …

Let’s go and create this abstract, colorful, mixed-up finale of the many moods of Season 2!

Please share your sound and an image with us:

  • Post a film / recording (around 1 minute in length) with an image on Instagram using the #moodscapesound #ambientradio (like this, we find your work!) or:

  • Also please upload your sounds on Google drive. Please give your track the following title: moodscapesound_yourplace_yourname_5 Like this we find your work for the weekly remix! or

  • Alternatively, drop an audiofile into our Telegram chat!

Now, all that is left to say for the time being is - THANK YOU!

Thank you to all of you who worked hard and created a lot of great soundscapes with us!

So great work all of you did! We hope to see you again for a next Season - sometime in the second part of the year! We all really enjoy this community - we hope that we will grow and go on with many more ideas and collections!

A special thank you also goes to Paul Paulun for very thoughtful strolls through the rich history of field recordings. We had the great opportunity to get to know a sound archeologist! Thank you for your contribution.

Heartfelt thanks also go to Riccardo Caspani and Giuseppe Cordaro - without their great work this project would never have happened. Also without the support of Norient and Limiaria as our partners we would not have gone far - thank you!

One last push, one last laughter, some more love and all the spectrum of possible colors ...

kiss kiss love love!

have a happy summer!
