Hello hello

how are you today?

Today, we are up to something …. unusual….

First, take on your headphones and listen to some of the following links… just an earful will be enough….

Can you guess what kind of soundscape, space we are looking for today?

Exactly, today, we would like to explore an area, a space, a place that gives you the creeps.

If they would do a horror movie in your town, where would they go for a shooting?

Where would you not want to be all by yourself, around midnight?

Did you know that there is a special instrument created exactly to create horror movie soundscapes?

Affectionately known as "The Apprehension Engine," this one-of-a-kind instrument was commissioned by movie composer Mark Korven. Korven wanted to create spooky noises in a more acoustic and original way—but the right instrument didn't exist. So his friend, guitar maker Tony Duggan-Smith, went deep into his workshop and assembled what has to be the spookiest instrument on Earth.

So, by now you are in the right mood to go out and observe a scary place with your ears. What kind of sounds make that place so scary? Can you describe them for us?

Again, we simply ask you to observe closely using your ears: Press start on your recorder, wait for one minute and press stop again.

From Start to Stop :-) Just as we did yesterday! As simple as a kiss!

Once you are happy with the result of your explorations - please do share it with us!

Please share your sound and an image with us:

  • Post a film / recording (around 1 minute in length) with an image on Instagram using the #startstopsound #ambientradio (like this, we find your work!) or

  • Also please upload your sounds on Google drive. Please give your track the following title: startstopsound_yourname_yourplace5. Like this we find your work for the weekly remix! or

  • Alternatively, drop an audiofile into our Telegram chat!

Did you recognize what we were doing this week?

We created a library of places we can go back to, to create our very own soundscapes.

We made an inventory of spaces with a specific atmosphere to them.

Next week, we will go on exploring these places and observe how sounds change with time.

All of this we do to get a deep understanding of the components of a soundscape. The more research we do, the more aspects we collect and they will be part of the final puzzle where we will manipulate sounds and tell our stories.

Thank you so much for an extremely nice first week, with a lot of wonderful contributions and recordings!

We promise that soon, we will allow you more space to create and play!

See you next week!

Love and Kisses, Pan, Delia and the whole Ambient Radio Crew!
