Season 2 / Week 1/ Day 1 Monday: An introduction to Soundscapes and Greetings from Italy!

ambientradiocrew

Good morning dear Ambient Radio Community!

How are you all doing? How have you spent the last few weeks? We hope our letter finds you healthy and well!

We are very happy to be back with a second Season! And we are over the moon that you are tuning in and join us for another round of sonic explorations! Pan recently got really nervous and we all think it is time to make him get back on the road again… Delia will also show up this week sharing with us some technical tips and tricks ...

We have a lot of exciting adventures lying ahead of us! As we left you in Italy last Season, we will pick you up over there in week one. Afterwards, we will explore some volcanoes and visit Portland, Oregon! The last week of Season two we will spend in Delhi, India!

So, get ready and back your bags, backpacks, purses, totes. Get a good pair of shoes that are made for walking - and off we go!

Today, we want to dive into our topic of the week - Soundscapes.

hmmmmm…. What is a Soundscape?

Wikipedia tells us the following:

"A soundscape is the acoustic environment as perceived by humans, in context. The term was originally coined by Michael Southworth,[1] and popularised by R. Murray Schafer.[2] There is a varied history of the use of soundscape depending on discipline, ranging from urban design to wildlife ecology to computer science."

Last Season, we collected sounds of things. This time, we will collect and explore the sounds of our surroundings. We will try to capture the essence of different environments.

Ok, we see Pan frowning, and so you might - but no worries - step by step we will advance…

And we can always count on the help of the artists joining our journey!

This week, Francesco Giannico will be with us! It is a great honor to have him as our guest. He is an Italian artist, musician and sound sculptor. During the week, we will share more about his work and his practice with you!

The album is also available over the website of Francesco.

Francesco answers us a lot of questions in this week's podcast - listen to his interview here!

And… we are not yet done with introductions! In Season 2, sound archeologist Paul Paulun contributes to the Ambient Radio podcast. He shares with us some wonderful short stories about his research on the history of field recordings. Always on Wednesdays - we will share a lot of links to the material he collected! We are so honored to be able to feature Pauls wonderful work! Here you can visit the archives and websites he curates!

With us are of course also the curators of Norient.com and Liminaria - our partners for Ambient Radio.

So, by now, the crew is ready and we hope you are as well! Don’t worry, if you have not yet fully finished packing - for the time being, we stay in your room….

Let’s get to work!

Today, we start to get familiar with what a soundscape could be. Let us start really simply with exploring the sounds of the house where you live. Can you describe to us a room of your house? How does your kitchen sound?

Choose one room in your house, close your eyes and observe for a few minutes, what the room sounds like.

Once you think you got an understanding of the sounds of your room - press start on your recorder, wait for one minute and press stop again.

From Start to Stop. (We will get back to this phrase later this week).

Once you are happy with the result of your explorations - please do share it with us!

Please share your sound and an image with us:

  • Post a film / recording (around 1 minute in length) with an image on Instagram using the #startstopsound #ambientradio (like this, we find your work!) or

  • You can directly upload your sounds on Google drive. Please give your track the following title: startstopsound_yourname_yourplace1. Like this we find your work for the weekly remix! or

  • Alternatively, drop an audiofile into our Telegram chat!

To us it feels very nice to be back in touch and start sharing sounds again!

We are very curious to see where this Season takes us!

Keep your ears stiff / Haltet die Ohren steif - and hear you tomorrow!

Love and kisses, Pan, Delia and the whole Ambient Radio Crew!
