Season 1 / Week 3 / Day 11: Greetings from Zurich and the small Patch of Grass between two streets

Good morning dear Ears around the globe!

How are you doing? Do you enjoy a relaxed weekend?

We are very relaxed, between family dinners and looking for Easter Eggs! So our podcast-schedule got a bit out of track - our next interviews will follow soon!

We travelled to Zürich to meet Mélia Roger, a very talented sound artist and sound engineer. She will be our first guest this week!

We meet her on a small patch of green grass between two big roads, on a busy Monday morning with a lot of traffic to our left and our right... Not exactly the romantic garden we dream of, you might say… But here starts Mélias work: At the moment, she is working on an “Air Listening Station” - and she makes us hear even the smallest particles that pollute the air in the city. This process of Sonification allows us to hear the invisible PM10 or NOx matter in real time.

Mélia is trying to bridge between different disciplines. She aims at creating a dialogue between art and science, trying to go one step beyond using art as a mere illustration of natural science - but creating a common language. Mélia Roger speaks about her work and her fascination for sound in our interview for the podcast that will follow these days!

But now, let’s get ready to use our ears around our gardens!

During this week, we will do a lot of interesting things and experiments!

First, we start where we ended last week - near the plants that keep you company where you live, in your house. These plants have a life of their own we know very little about, isn’t it?

For the next few days - we will share with you every day a so-called “non functional listening exercise” - written and ideated by Gaspare Caliri. Gaspare is part of a collective who restored greenhouses in a very beautiful public garden in Bologna's Giardini Margherita - he is also a sound gardener, we could say … You can find him here!

So here comes his non functional listening exercise n° 1

Choose your preferred place in the house. Then, close your eyes and move around until you feel you reached a place that sounds really good.

Today's task is to record / create the sounds of what you heard during the listening exercise. Quite difficult - yet not impossible to do, isn’t it?

Maybe you even overhear a conversation between coming from a garden in your mind or in your neighbourhood?

Please share your sound and an image (it can be a picture /drawing / film of the natural thing that produces todays sound) with us:

Have a nice day and see you tomorrow!

Love and Kisses,

Pan, Delia and the crew
